Social justice is a major aspect of Jewish life at Hunter College. Doing social justice work provides an opportunity for students to pursue righteousness in a Jewish way by being actively involved in Tikkun Olam (repairing the world). Through social justice (Tzedek), students can participate in community service, activism and education. We also help students develop partnerships with campus and neighborhood agencies.
Here are a few of the activities we participate in during the school year.
Habitat for Humanity Build in Brooklyn
New York area Hillels are sponsoring a trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. for 49 Jewish students and 49 students of color. The students will leave New York on Saturday night, March 6, 2010 and will be staying overnight at a metropolitan Washington, DC hotel. On Sunday, March 7, 2010 the students will visit the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and return to New York on Sunday, evening. One bus will be leaving from Brooklyn College Hillel and one bus will be leaving from Queens College Hillel. There will also be a pick-up and drop off stop at NYU Hillel in Manhattan.
The cost is $60.00 per student and staff. The requirement is that this be a first time visit to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum for the student. Each student must be interviewed by a Hillel staff member, fill out a personal information form found on QC Hillel's website, www.qchillel.org click "register" located under the picture of "United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Trip 2010". The deadline for the trip is Monday, February 22, 2010. If you cancel after this date you must still pay the $60.00 due to the fact that we have made bus, hotel and food arrangements.
