There are approximately 1,800 Jewish students at Hunter college.
Getting involved in Hillel at Hunter College is extremely easy. In fact, it's as easy as coming to the Hillel lounger (TH 501) and introducing yourself to our director, Rebecca Kaplan!
Of course, there are many different levels of involvement. If you just want a place to stop by from time to time and use the space as a rejuvination station, study for an hour between classes, check e-mail, or just schmooz with other students, then our lounge is your place.
If, however, you feel the calling to become a Jewish leader on campus, we have many leadership positions to offer our student body. Our current student leaders and staff members have a strong history of taking young, raw talent and helping them become stalwart Jewish leaders on campus.
Whatever your involvement level, come by and find out more.
One of Hillel at Hunter College's greatest strength is its pluralistic approach to student development. Students at Hillel hail from all many different countries and religious backgrounds. There are Russian Jews, Conservative Jews, Reform Jews, Brooklyn and/or Monsey Orthodox Jews, Hippie Jews, Green Jews, and of course, those that are "Just Jews".
Whatever your level of observance, all food at Hillel is Kosher (in more ways than one!) and we offer religious learning and counseling for all people.
There is quite a bit of kosher food available on the Upper East Side. The first place to look is the Hunter College Cafe, located on the third floor of Hunter West. There are kosher sandwiches and salads available for purchase.
In addition, there are a few Kosher restaurants within walking distance:
1. Mendy's: Meat, OU hashgacha. E 58th Street between Lexington & Park, in the Galleria. Mendy's has take-out and sit down service. They have deli sandwiches, knaidlach soup, hamburgers, hot dogs, and even goulash!
2. Gusto Va Mare:Dairy. 237 East 53rd Street, (212) 583-9300, www.gustovamare.com

A great question! I'm glad you asked! Because Hunter College is a commuter campus, we don't offer services on the High Holy Days. However, we do have a complete list of synagogues with services in the city. We focus on those synagogues near the main campus or near the dorms. Our list includes Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox shuls, and of course, everything in between. Email Hillel@hunter.cuny.edu for information on services around the city!
We do offer events surrounding the holidays. Check out our online calendar for events leading up to Rosh Hashanah and events during Succot. There is always food and a good time!

If you are unable to attend school due to a religious conflict, it counts as an excused absence. We suggest checking what days you may miss at the beginning of the semester and telling your professor right away. Turning in assignments in advance is definitely looked upon favorably!
